# What is NFPA 652?

## Fundamental Guidelines for Managing Combustible Dust Hazards

NFPA 652, titled *Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust*, establishes the foundational requirements for managing fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards associated with combustible dusts in various industries. Developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), this standard provides a framework for identifying and evaluating dust hazards through [Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA)](https://www.isystemsweb.com/who-can-perform-a-dust-hazard-analysis-dha/) and outlines basic principles for hazard management, including housekeeping, dust control, and explosion protection systems. NFPA 652 applies to facilities that produce, process, or handle combustible dust, serving as a unifying document that aligns with industry-specific standards like NFPA 61, 484, and 664. By adhering to NFPA 652, facilities can ensure a safer work environment, protect personnel and assets, and achieve compliance with regulatory and industry safety requirements.
